Let’s analyze American Gold/Silver Eagles and the Gold American Buffalo. Gold Eagles are actually 22 k gold for durability with a composition of 91.67% gold and the balance in silver and copper. However, if melted down each coin contains 1 troy ounce of gold. Gold American Buffalo’s are 24 k or .999 pure gold the slight difference are impurities that cannot be removed during the refining process. American Silver Eagles are .999 pure silver. Again there are minute impurities remaining during refining. I should add there is hardly any difference with purity between a .999 Eagle and a .9999 Canadian Maple Leaf. I hope this responds to your question adequately. Walter
